INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO REACH KORCULA ISLAND

With an airplane:

Best way is to fly to Dubrovnik International Airport or Split International Airport (second best option). From there you can take catamaran (only for passengers) to Korcula Island. From Korcula port we can organize you taxi that takes you to your apartment (10 min drive, approx. 100 HRK/13 EUR).
Here are the time tables for catamarans from Split/Dubrovnik to Korcula:
https://www.tp-line.hr/en/
https://krilo.hr/en/
It is recommendable to book your catamaran ticket in advance.

With a car:

There are 3 ways to reach Lumbarda:
1.) From any point in Europe, you pass Slovenia to reach the coastal town of Split (big ferry harbour) and then take a 2,5-hour Ferry drive to Vela Luka (a town on Korcula Island), from where there is a 45-minute drive to Lumbarda.

Once you reach Split, sign boards for Split port / Split ferry will start to appear. Following the signs, you will reach the port where information boards for Korcula/Vela Luka Island will guide you to reach the correct ferry peer. We suggest you park the car there (there is usually a line of cars; you can park behind the last one). We suggest booking the ferry ticket in advance online, as that way you reserve your spot on that ferry. But please note that this rule doesn’t apply for all ferry rides, but only for this particular one. After parking your car in the line, you can either return to your car or if you still have time, we recommend visiting the centre of Split which is only about a five-minute walk away.

When you board the ferry, please give a call to your host, at +386 41 806 608 (or send her a text message) and tell her where you are, so that she can wait for you at the apartment when you arrive.

After you have boarded the ferry, you will reach the Vela Luka port in about 2,5 hours. We recommend that you drive up a hill on the right side and follow the signs for the town of Korcula. The roads in the second part of the island have been renovated and it is pure pleasure to drive along them now. A few km before Korcula you will see a sign for Lumbarda, follow it and turn towards Lumbarda.

2.) The second possibility is that you pass Split and reach a coastal town of Ploce and board a ferry for Trpanj (on Peljesac Peninsula), from where you need to drive 25 minutes to reach another harbour town, Orebic, where you board a car ferry to Korcula Island (port Domince), only 5 kilometres away from Lumbarda.

3.) Another option is to go over the brand new Pelješki Bridge from the town of Komarna. When you cross this bridge, you come from Komarna towards Brijesta. From there you have a 45-minute drive to Orebić. And then by ferry from Orebič to Korčula (Dominče). From there you only need 5 km to Lumbarda.

Or, if you fly to Duborvnik and decide to rent a car there, then follow the sign boards for Split to reach the main costal road. Once on the road, after some time signs for the town of Ston will start to appear – this is a coastal town connecting the main shore and the Peljesac peninsula. Follow the signs and when you have reached Ston; your next destination is Orebic town on Peljesac peninsula. This town is on the other side of the peninsula and you will need about an 1,5 hour's drive by car through Peljesac to reach it. The ride offers wonderful views of the surrounding scenery. After arriving to Orebic, follow the signs for the ferry/port where you will board the ferry which will take you to Domince (a coastal town on Korcula Island, the ferry sails around 12 times a day, every day). The ride takes about 20 minutes.

From this point on all the instructions for the arrival to the apartments are the same, regardless of the route you have arrived from.

When you turn from the main road on Korcula to follow the road to Lumbarda, you will pass a few houses and you should follow the road for the next 5 km. When you finally enter the town of Lumbarda, you will soon spot a small bus station on your left hand side and after that, a graveyard. Right after the bus station turn left - into a narrow street near the sea, that looks like this:

... and drive directly by the sea for approx. 200 m (you are ascending a small hill on the left), then you will spot a small sign on a stone fence saying Apartments Sunshine – pointing you to the right. Follow the sign, turn right and drive for about 50 m and turn left and up at the phone booth – then you will see the yellow facade of the apartments Sunshine. You can park by the house and Mrs Tanja will be nearby to give you a tour. You will be asked to give your passports to them for a short while, so they can register you, which is common procedure in Croatia. She can also provide you with home-made olive oil, Dalmatian wine or fresh fish.

We are also at your disposal via SMS on our mobile phone throughout your vacation on +386 31 606 608.

RECOMMENDED ADVENTURES AND RESTAURANTS

ISLAND KORCULA

Korčula, located in Middle Dalmatia, spans 270 km² (46.5 km long and 5-8 km wide). The distance between Vela Luka on one end and Korčula Town on the other one is 55 km.

1. Nearest Swimming Spot (Just below the house):

Rocky beach with shadow under the house, 80 m away.

2. Sandy Beaches (1 km away):

3. Žitna Bay (Zavalatica)

Google Maps Link
This serene location features crystal-clear waters and a tranquil atmosphere. While it requires a short hike to access (less than 1 min), the reward is well worth the effort. It’s a 30-minute drive from Korčula Town, and parking is available uphill.

4. Pupnat Bay (Pupnatska Luka)

Google Maps Link
For a scenic and secluded experience, take a 30-minute drive to Pupnat Bay. This charming bay has a beautiful pebble beach and a typical Dalmatian restaurant. Since there is no shade, bring a sunshade. For the best experience, visit early in the morning when the colors of the sea are most vibrant and there are fewer visitors.

5. Bačva Bay (Plaža Bačva)

Google Maps Link
Located just 25 minutes from your apartment, Bačva Bay features small white pebbles warmed by the sun, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing day by the sea. The journey to get there can be a bit daunting, with a winding serpentine road (not for the faint of heart!), but the stunning view at the destination is well worth the trip.

6. Korčula Town (10-minute drive or bike ride):

Korčula Town, known as "little Dubrovnik," is famous for its medieval Old Town, stunning architecture, and rich history. A highlight is the Moreska sword dance games, held in the amphitheater under the stars. After the show, enjoy a cocktail at Massimo, located in a tower within the city walls (note: a wooden ladder is required to access it). Complete your visit with a delicious seafood dinner at one of the town’s recommended restaurants (see further details below).

7. Vela Luka fisherman's town (45 minutes from Korčula Town):

  • Vela Spila Cave Google Maps Link: A significant prehistoric archaeological site in Europe.
  • Zlokic Olive Farm Google Maps Link: Explore this small eco-museum to learn about olive cultivation and natural oil production.

8. Proizd Island (Magical turquoise pebble beaches)

Google Maps Link
Take the Muro boat, which departs three times a day (9 am, 10 am, 11 am), for a 40-minute ride to Proizd Island, known for its pristine beaches. While there is a older restaurant serving basic dishes, it’s recommended to bring a sunshade and your own snacks. The island has four beaches, with the last one on the left being the most beautiful and also a nudist beach.

9. Boat Rentals from Lumbarda (ask your host for Speed boat experience!):

Rent a small fisherman's boat (4-5 HP) for €75/day without a license. Larger boats (50-100 HP) require a valid boat license and cost between €220-280/day. Ask your host to recommend and organise it for you. Be mindful of the afternoon mistral wind, which can be strong. You can also ask your host Tanya for a weather forecast and renting the boat.

10. Kocje Nature Park (10 minutes drive from Lumbarda)

Google Maps Link
Kocje Nature Park, located near Zrnovo village, offers a unique natural environment, featuring stone mazes and lush greenery. The park is overgrown with moss and ivy vines, creating a magical ambiance. The walk also provides stunning views of the sea.

11. Island Hopping Activity

Take a water taxi from Prvi Zal Beach in Lumbarda to visit three nearby islands:

12. Wine Tasting in Lumbarda (Walking distance, 10-15 min):

These wineries offer an exceptional experience, with breathtaking views and passionate hosts who will share their knowledge of local wines.

13. Olive Oil & Honey Tasting (Near Korčula Town):

OPG Komparak Google Maps Link
Visit this family-owned agrotourism farm to taste high-quality olive oil, honey, and wine, all produced sustainably. The farm is set in a tranquil location among olive groves and vineyards, offering a perfect escape to experience Korčula's natural beauty.

My favourite 1-day trip to get to know the Island:

Žitna Bay (Zavalatica)

Google Maps Link
This serene location features crystal-clear waters and a tranquil atmosphere. While it requires a short hike to access (less than 1 min), the reward is well worth the effort. It’s a 30-minute drive from Korčula Town, and parking is available uphill.

Then head to the

  • Toreta Winery (Smokvica): +385 98 184 9788 Google Maps Link for an amazing local white and red wine with some snacks.

After that, head to Blato:

14. Folk Museum & Etno House Barilo (Blato town)

+385 20 851 623 Google Maps Link
Explore the Folk Museum and Etno House Barilo, a folk and ethnographic collection in Blato, showcasing artifacts from traditional peasant life in Korčula and the surrounding villages.

At the end, finish the day trip to one of the Michelin recommended restaurant:

Konoba Mate in Pupnat village on the way back home to Lumbarda. E voila! Perfect day :)
